SISSON MUSEUM LAYOUT

With the summer season here the 9x13 foot HO scale model railroad display at the Sisson Museum in Mount Shasta, CA, enters its tenth year of operation.

Two trains may be run by the push buttons by visitors on this condensed rendition of the Shasta Line from Dunsmuir to Black Butte. Represented on the layout are the communities of Mount Shasta, Dunsmuir and Mott along with locations like Black Butte, Cantara Loop and the historic Dunsmuir Hardware. The ever-popular “Shasta Daylight” passenger train is also present.

Built by the Siskiyou Model Railroad Club, the project lasted from February 1997 until its completion in April 1998 The layout is enclosed in glass. Retired Disney Imagineer Don Wirth completed most of the bench work. Model train supplies for the layout came from Golden West Hobbies.

These volunteers left behind items from their lives including a California Highway Patrol car with retired Sgt. William Duncan’s call number on the roof, a Shasta Valley Railroad flatcar, Vern Potter’s fictional line and Jay Mika’s scratch built Dunsmuir Amtrak Depot (which once rested on the Siskiyou County gold award winning booth model train display centerpiece at the 1994 California State Fair), Also, Reverend Joe Raymaker graced the Sisson layout with a church, Bruce Duncan left a Butteville Elementary School bus where he was once a school board member and a museum volunteer who worked for the Post Office denoted a postal truck. YREKA WESTERN BOX CAR

These Yreka Western 50’ outside braced boxcar comes in four road numbers ( 25150, 25157, 25168, 25186 ), available in 2-rail or 3-rail version. They are a limited edition commissioned in 2003 by Golden West Hobbies of 150 units from Weaver.. These are O scale models and have sliding doors.

The Yreka Western Railroad participated in the per diem boxcar business of the 1970’s and 80’s. They had 100 leased 50’ boxcars, along with 43 ex-WP boxcars they owned. The leased cars lasted into the 90’s.

McCLOUD RAILWAY CABOOSE

Golden West Hobbies commissioned Athearn to custom paint a limited run of 500 HO McCloud Railway wide vision caboose “Blue Box” kits in 2004. The road number is #102 It is available in kit form and the more popular built or “ready to run” form.

The International Car Company built McCloud Railway #102 in 1962. Built for the McCloud River Railroad, #102 and #101 were transferred to the McCloud Railway in 1992 when Mr. Forbis bought the Railroad from Itel Corp. The caboose was active on the McCloud Railway into the 21st century

A PAINT CHIP

Color matching model trains from prototype photos is tricky business. Shades can fool you. Fortunately when it came time to “pick the shade of blue” for our HO Limited Edition Yreka Western S-4’s we had a better option. Although the prototype S-4’s are long gone from the YWRR there is a boxcar in their yard that solved our situation. YWRR had 43 ex-WP boxcars painted in the same blue paint in the late 1960’s. One car was damaged switching in Hornbrook one day and has set in the Yreka yard ever since as the other forty two were scrapped. With the Railroad’s permission we were able to find an excellent loose paint chip on the inside of the car, just inside the doors and unweathered. Passing it on to the Atlas paint-matching lab our locomotives now have their true color.

YREKA WESTERN RAILROAD's S-4's

Golden West Hobbies commissioned Atlas Model Railroad Co. to custom paint a limited run of 300 Yreka Western S-4 diesel locomotives in HO scale in two road numbers in 2004. The locomotives have all wheel electrical pickup and all wheel drive making for smooth running Alcos. They also have dual flywheels.

These prototype Alco 1,000hp diesels were built in 1955. Acquired by the YWRR, a Kyle Railway subsidiary, in 1972 they retained their former UP designations #1171 & #1172. Number 1172 remained active with the YWRR until 1979 when it was transferred to another Kyle Railroad, the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad. It was finally scrapped in 1987. Number 1171 spent the remainder of its life with the YWRR before being scrapped in1988. The Alco was a preferred choice of the train crews of the YWRR in the 1970’s due to its ability to haul heavy tonnage over “Butcher Hill” without a second diesel.
